These can be confusing as English uses “to” for each of these.
Zu
Used for people, professionals, activities, and brand/store names.
Examples:
- Ich gehe zu Maria.
- Ich gehe zu meinen Eltern.
- Ich muss zum Arzt.
- Ich gehe zu einer Party.
- Ich muss zu einem Meeting gehen!
- Ich bin gestern zu McDonalds gegangen.
It can also express going towards someplace and not entering.
- Ich gehe zu Bahnhof. (I’m going to the train station. [to maybe the front but not in])
In
Used when you are going into a building and countries with articles (die USA, die Türkei, die Schweiz).
Examples:
- Ich gehe ins Kino
- Wir bin im Park.
- Ich fliege in die USA.
Remember that this is a Wechsel Präpositionen.
Nach
Used for large geographical areas, like cities, countries, and continents. It is also used for directions.
Examples:
- Ich fahre nach Berlin.
- Ich fliege nach Spanien
- Wir reisen nach Afrika
- Geh nach links. (Go left)
Exceptions
- Ich gehe nach Hause. (This is a fixed phrase)
